Family Lifestyle Photo Session: A Busy Mom’s Guide

I get it—you’ve got a million things on your plate. Between managing your career, juggling the kids, and somehow finding time to, you know, breathe, the last thing you need is another stressor. But here we are: the family photo session.

It’s supposed to be fun, but now you’re staring at the closets and wondering how on earth you’re going to get everyone looking decent, let alone picture-perfect. Well, deep breath, mama. We’re going to get through this together.

Comfort is Key

Let’s start with the most important thing: comfort. No one is going to look or feel their best if they’re tugging at a too-tight waistband or itching in scratchy fabric. If you’re comfortable, you’re more relaxed—and that shows in your photos.

Flowy dresses? Yes, please. They’re super popular, especially in warmer weather, and they move beautifully on camera. But if dresses aren’t your thing? No worries. Rock your favorite jeans and that top that makes you feel fabulous. This session is about capturing you, not some Pinterest version of you.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone in matching white T-shirts and jeans. (Phew!) Instead, think about coordinating outfits with complementary colors. Maybe you wear a soft blush, your partner goes for a muted olive, and your little one sports a denim blue. They all play nicely together without being too “matchy-matchy.”

And while we’re at it—prints. They can be great, but let’s not go overboard. If one of you is rocking a vibrant floral or bold plaid, keep everyone else’s outfits a bit more subdued. Balance is key.

Neutrals Are Your Friend

Neutral tones are a classic for a reason—they just work. They’re timeless, easy on the eyes, and blend seamlessly with natural settings. But don’t feel like you have to stick to beige or gray. Soft pastels, earthy tones, and even a rich navy can act as neutrals that won’t overpower the shot.

Dress for the Weather

This one is big. Nothing ruins a session faster than a child who’s freezing or overheating. Keep an eye on the forecast and dress accordingly. Layers are your friend—light jackets or cardigans can be added or removed as needed.

And shoes! Make sure everyone’s shoes are appropriate for the location. If we’re wandering through fields or trails, heels might not be your best bet. Comfy shoes that you’re not afraid to walk in will make the experience so much more enjoyable.

Bug Spray is a Must (Trust Me)

Okay, I know this seems out of left field, but trust me on this one. If we’re heading outdoors—especially in the warmer months—don’t forget the bug spray. There’s nothing like a swarm of mosquitoes to turn smiles into grimaces. A quick spritz before we start can save the day.

Let Go of Perfection

Lastly, remember that this session is about capturing your family as you are right now, chaos and all. It doesn’t need to be perfect; it just needs to be you. If the kids are a little wild, if your hair doesn’t stay exactly in place—that’s okay. That’s life. And that’s what we’re celebrating.

So, take a deep breath, put on that outfit that makes you feel amazing, and let’s make some memories. You’ve got this.
