Finding the Perfect Spring & Summer Location For Family Photos in Central Virginia
The weather is warming up, the trees are turning green again, and the golden hour light is absolutely perfect. If you have been thinking about scheduling a photo session, now is the time. But the big question remains: Where should we do it?
There are so many beautiful locations around Charlottesville, and choosing the right spot really depends on the atmosphere you want. Do you prefer something relaxed and cozy? Adventurous and wild? Urban and full of character? To help make the decision easier, I have gathered some of my favorite locations, along with the benefits, potential drawbacks, and any costs involved.
If you are looking for a relaxed and natural setting—something easygoing and stress-free, especially for families with young children—these locations might be perfect for you.
1. Your Home
There is truly no place like home. In-home sessions are some of my favorites because they feel personal, intimate, and unique to you. The best part? You do not have to go anywhere.
✅ Pros: Super relaxed, meaningful, and completely personalized. Children tend to feel more comfortable at home, which allows for the most authentic moments. Also, access to snacks.
❌ Cons: If you worry about clutter or lighting, this may not be your first choice. However, I am not here to judge your laundry pile, and I can move small things out of the way to create a beautiful space.
💰 Cost: Free!
2. Ivy Creek Natural Area
This location is absolutely stunning—rustic barns, tall grasses, gardens, and wooded areas. It is a dream for families, couples, or anyone who loves nature.
✅ Pros: A variety of backgrounds, gorgeous light, and rarely crowded.
❌ Cons: Since it is entirely natural terrain, expect dirt paths and some light walking.
💰 Cost: Free!
3. Mint Springs Park (Crozet)
This hidden gem features a playground, hiking trails, and a lake. It is a wonderful choice if you want scenic beauty combined with space for children to play.
✅ Pros: Beautiful landscapes, fun for kids, and lots of variety.
❌ Cons: It can be busy during peak seasons, and there is a small entrance fee in the spring and summer.
💰 Cost: Free in the off-season, small fee during warmer months.
4. Boar’s Head Inn & Resort
This peaceful lakeside park has swings, walking trails, and a serene atmosphere. It is a lovely setting for couples, maternity sessions, or families who want something picturesque yet low-key.
✅ Pros: Scenic, easy to access, and not usually crowded.
❌ Cons: No major drawbacks, but lighting varies depending on the time of day.
💰 Cost: Free for outdoor areas!
5. Big Meadows (Skyline Drive)
One of my absolute favorite locations. Open meadows, soft grasses, and breathtaking mountain views in every direction. It is an incredible setting, especially at sunset.
✅ Pros: Stunning light, spacious areas for children to explore, and an unforgettable backdrop.
❌ Cons: It is a bit of a drive, and there is a park entrance fee.
💰 Cost: Shenandoah National Park entrance fee applies.
