Charlottesville is full of wonderful places for families to explore, play, and connect. As a mom and lifestyle photographer, I love finding spots where kids can be themselves, and parents can sneak in a few moments to relax, take a breath, and enjoy the beauty around them. Whether it’s a sunny spring afternoon or a rainy summer day, these are my top 5 favorite family activities in Charlottesville, plus a bonus spot that we love visiting.
1. Riverview Park – Belmont Neighborhood
(1909 Chesapeake St)
Riverview Park is a hidden gem in the Belmont neighborhood. It’s free, open, and has a boat launch on the Rivanna River, where kids can splash and explore. Families can hike the short trails, play on the playground, or simply relax by the water. On hot summer days, this park becomes a little oasis: a place for kids to expend energy and for parents to enjoy a quiet moment watching their little ones.
2. Jefferson-Madison Regional Library - Central Branch
(201 E. Market Street)
For book-loving families, the Central Branch of the Charlottesville Public Library is a quiet retreat full of books, activities, and spaces to spark creativity. The kids’ area is welcoming and encourages independent exploration, reading, and imaginative play. It’s perfect for a calm morning outing or a rainy day adventure. Bonus: the library often hosts story times and small events that make every visit special.

3. Ivy Creek Natural Area
(1780 Earlysville Rd,)
For families who love the outdoors, Ivy Creek Natural Area is a beautiful, safe space to explore. With short trails, meadows, gardens, and even an old barn, it’s ideal for picnics, nature walks, and short hikes. Kids can discover wildlife, flowers, and open spaces while parents enjoy some fresh air and calm scenery. It’s one of those locations where you can truly slow down and savor the moment.
4. Spray Grounds – GreenLeaf Park
(1598 Rose Hill Drive)
When summer heat strikes, the spray grounds at GreenLeaf Park (and really any of the spray grounds in the city parks) are lifesavers. Free to use, shaded, and complete with a playground, they’re ideal for kids to cool off and play while parents relax nearby. The area is cozy, so parking can be tight at peak hours, but the joy on kids’ faces makes it worthwhile. It’s a classic summer activity that always makes my daughter’s day.
5. Virginia Discovery Museum
(524 E Main St)
If the weather isn’t cooperating, the Virginia Discovery Museum is a fantastic option. Admission is required (link here), but it’s worth every penny. Kids can explore interactive exhibits, engage in hands-on activities, and get inspired to learn in a fun, playful environment. It’s one of those spots where parents can watch their children’s curiosity light up and share in the joy of discovery.
