8 Things to Bring to Your Family Photo Session (That You Probably Haven’t Thought Of)

By a Richmond & Charlottesville Lifestyle Photographer

There’s a lot that goes into preparing for a photo session. Outfits, timing, making sure everyone is in a good mood (or at least close enough). It’s easy to focus on how everything will look, and forget about how it will actually feel.

But the truth is, the most beautiful sessions happen when everyone is comfortable, relaxed, and able to be present. Over the years, I’ve noticed a handful of small, often-overlooked things that make a huge difference, especially for outdoor sessions around Richmond, Charlottesville, and the Shenandoah area. These aren’t complicated. But they are the difference between feeling distracted… and actually enjoying your session.

So What Do You Bring?

1. Bug Spray (Non-Negotiable in Virginia)

If we’re anywhere near grass, woods, or water, this matters. Mosquitos and ticks are part of life here in Central Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley, and they don’t care that you’re in a beautiful outfit. The last thing you want is to be swatting bugs or worrying about bites instead of focusing on your family. A quick layer of bug spray before we start goes a long way.

2. Sunscreen (Especially for Fair Skin)

Even during evening sessions, the sun can be stronger than it feels. If you burn easily, I strongly recommend applying sunscreen ahead of time. It’s one of those things you won’t think about in the moment, but you’ll definitely feel later. This is especially important in open fields, mountain overlooks, or waterfront locations where shade is limited.

3. Two Pairs of Shoes

One for walking. One for photos.

Many of the best locations involve a short walk, sometimes over uneven ground, grass, or gravel. Practical shoes will make that part easy. Then, once we get to our spot, you can change into your preferred shoes for photos. It’s a simple switch that keeps the experience smooth and the final look exactly how you want it.

4. Water + Simple Snacks

You don’t need to pack a full picnic. But a small snack and water can completely turn around a tired or overwhelmed child (or honestly, adult). A quick reset goes a long way in keeping the energy light and relaxed.

5. A Small Tote Bag

Something simple to hold everything above. Don’t overthink it. I’ll keep an eye on it during the session so you don’t have to worry about where it is.

6. A Comfort Item (or Something Fun)

A favorite small stuffed animal. Bubbles. Even a little speaker for music. These aren’t distractions. They’re tools. When kids feel comfortable and engaged, everything shifts. Some of the most genuine, joy-filled moments come from the in-between, like a spontaneous dance party or a quiet snuggle with something familiar.

7. Wipes (Trust Me on This One)

If you have toddlers, you already understand. They move fast. They explore everything. And they somehow find the one thing you wish they hadn’t. Wipes are a quick fix that can save the moment without stress. (I always bring some, but it never hurts to have backup.)

8. Hats (Practical + Beautiful)

The sun can be intense, especially in the summer. Hats offer a little protection, and they photograph beautifully. They can stay on or come off throughout the session—both work. It’s one of those pieces that’s both functional and effortlessly stylish.

The Bottom Line

You don’t need to bring a lot. But bringing a few thoughtful things can completely change how your session feels. When you’re not distracted by discomfort, logistics, or little stressors, you’re able to settle in. To be present. To enjoy your family as they are. And that’s where the images you’ll truly love come from.
