Why Summer Might Be the Most Magical Time for Family Photos in Charlottesville, VA

When you think about family photos, summer probably isn't the first season that comes to mind. Most people picture fall leaves, cozy sweaters, and cooler temperatures.
And honestly, I understand why.
Summer can feel busy. The days quickly fill with camps, vacations, baseball games, swim lessons, cookouts, and trying to keep everyone entertained while school is out. The schedules that were supposed to feel relaxed somehow become packed.
Then there's the heat. The humidity. The concern that everyone will be sweaty, tired, and ready to go home before the session even begins.
But every year, as summer arrives, I find myself falling in love with it all over again. Maybe it's because summer carries a kind of nostalgia that no other season does. The smell of sunscreen. Running through sprinklers in the backyard. Swimming at the local pool until your fingers wrinkle. Catching lightning bugs just as the sun begins to disappear. Camping trips. Neighborhood cookouts. Ice cream melting faster than you can eat it. Baseball games that stretch into warm evenings.
There is something about summer that feels almost timeless.
Even now, as an adult, some of my favorite evenings are the simplest ones. You'll often find me reading in a hammock, taking a walk through the grass, or standing outside a little longer than necessary watching the fireflies begin to appear.
There is a certain peace that settles in during a summer evening. The pace softens. The light lingers. You find yourself looking around and realizing, this is my life right now.
And that's exactly why I think summer family sessions deserve more attention than they get.

Common Reasons Families Avoid Summer Sessions
Whenever families tell me they've ruled out summer photos, the reasons are usually the same.
"It's too hot."
"The kids will be miserable."
"Our schedule is all over the place."
"We should probably wait until fall."
These are completely valid concerns. No one wants to spend an hour sweating in direct sunlight while trying to convince their children to smile for a camera.
The good news? Summer sessions don't have to look like that. In fact, some of the most relaxed, joyful, and meaningful sessions I've photographed have happened during the summer months.

The Magic That Makes Summer Sessions Different
There is something special about summer evenings. The light feels softer. The pace feels slower. Families seem more relaxed. Children have spent the day exploring, playing outside, and simply being kids. The pressure and structure of the school year isn't quite as present. And that energy shows up in photographs.
Summer sessions often feel less like a formal photo shoot and more like spending an evening together. Walking barefoot through a field. Watching children chase each other through tall grass. Throwing rocks into the river. Holding hands as the sun sinks lower behind the trees. Some of my favorite family photographs have happened during these ordinary summer moments. Not because everything was perfect. Because it wasn't. Because it felt real.
Last summer, I photographed a family with two young daughters during an evening session just before sunset. We started with the usual thingsβwalking together, cuddling, exploring, and playing. Then somewhere in the middle of the session, the girls decided it was time for a dance party. Suddenly everyone was laughing. Mom and Dad joined in. The girls spun in circles until they were dizzy. Nobody was worried about standing perfectly or looking at the camera. For a few minutes, they simply enjoyed being together. Those images became some of my favorites from the entire session. Not because they were perfectly posed.
Because they captured what that season of family life actually felt like.
Worried About the Heat? Here's What We Can Do
One of the biggest misconceptions about summer photography is that we're stuck shooting in the hottest part of the day. Thankfully, that's rarely the case. There are plenty of ways to make summer sessions comfortable.
We can schedule an early morning session before temperatures rise.
We can choose locations with plenty of shade and tree cover.
We can meet later in the evening when the sun is lower and the air feels more comfortable.
We can even choose locations where children can splash in the water and cool off while we create photographs.
One of my favorite summer sessions was a senior session at Ivy Creek Natural Area. Everything was impossibly green. The gardens were overflowing with color. The evening sunlight filtered through the trees in the most beautiful way.
Yes, it was warm. But we planned around it. We scheduled the session later in the evening, stayed near shaded areas, and took breaks whenever we needed them. The result was a gallery filled with golden light, vibrant greenery, and all the beauty that summer has to offer. At times she looked like she had stepped straight out of a storybook, surrounded by wildflowers and sunlight.
The heat became a small detail in the experience, not the thing we remembered. That's often how summer sessions work. When we plan thoughtfully, the memories and photographs become far more important than the temperature.

Some of My Favorite Summer Photo Locations Around Charlottesville
One of the best things about summer is that it opens up so many beautiful location options.
Ivy Creek Natural Area
I love Ivy Creek for its shaded trails, beautiful gardens, and peaceful atmosphere. It offers plenty of greenery throughout the summer and feels tucked away from the busyness of everyday life.
The Downtown Mall
The Downtown Mall can be wonderful for summer sessions, especially in the morning or later in the evening. The variety of architecture, brick walkways, and storefronts creates a completely different feel from a nature location. And if we need a break from the heat, there are plenty of places to step inside for a few minutes.
The Rivanna River
For adventurous families, the Rivanna River can be pure magic.
Children can splash in the water, skip rocks, and explore the shoreline while we document the experience. It often feels less like a photo session and more like a family adventure.
Fox Haven Farm
Fox Haven Farm offers beautiful meadows, open skies, and some of my favorite summer evening light. It's perfect for families who love a natural setting and plenty of room for children to run and play.
Raven's Roost Overlook
If you're willing to make the drive, it's hard to beat the mountain views. The overlook provides an incredible backdrop while still allowing the focus to remain on connection and experience. And honestly, that's only the beginning.
Some of the most meaningful sessions happen in backyards, neighborhood parks, family farms, or the places your children already know and love. Often, the best location is the one that already holds part of your family's story.
Sometimes a Location Means Something More
One of my favorite summer sessions took place at Raven's Roost Overlook. The couple I was photographing was preparing to move away from Virginia. The mountains had been part of their story for years, and before they left, they wanted one final evening there together. We arrived as the sun began to sink lower over the Shenandoah Valley. The pace felt unhurried. We weren't rushing from one pose to the next. We wandered. Talked. Paused often to admire the view.
There was a sense of gratitude woven throughout the entire evening. Gratitude for the years they had spent there. Gratitude for the memories they had built. Gratitude for the chance to slow down and savor it one last time before moving on to a new chapter.
When I think about summer sessions, I often think about that evening. Not because of the mountain viewsβalthough they were incredible. Because it reminded me that photographs are rarely about the location itself. They're about what that place means to the people standing in it.
The Photos You'll Be Grateful to Have
Years from now, you probably won't remember whether it was 82 degrees or 88. You won't remember checking the weather forecast. You won't remember whether your child got grass stains on their shorts. What you'll remember is this season. The missing front teeth. The way your child still reached for your hand. The summer evenings that seemed endless. The backyard games. The family walks. The laughter that came so easily. The things that feel ordinary now but won't always be.
Summer has a way of slipping past us. One minute you're planning the season, and the next you're shopping for school supplies again. Photographs give us a chance to hold onto a small piece of it. Not just what it looked like. But what it felt like.
Planning a Summer Family Session
If you've been considering family photos but have been waiting for cooler weather, summer may be worth another look. Together, we can find a location, time, and approach that works well for your family. We'll plan around the heat. We'll embrace the season. And we'll create images that preserve this chapter of your family's story exactly as it is right now. Because one day, these summer evenings will become memories, too.
